Activate your card.

With our Quick Cards feature, you’ll have already received an instant digital card in your app, with only digital wallet transactions enabled. Now that you’ve received your physical card, login to your Online Banking or Defence Bank app and follow these steps to enable tap and go, ATM, in-store and online purchases.

Step 1.

Log in to the Defence Bank app.

Step 2.

Go to Manage Accounts > Manage Cards.

Step 3.

Select the card you wish to activate > select Card Controls.

Step 4.

To activate, simply tap the card control button you wish to enable and it will highlight.

Your digital wallet transactions will already be enabled to allow for your instant digital card to make transactions via Apple Pay, Fitbit Pay, Garmin Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay.

payWave options can be enabled once In-Store purchases is enabled.

Choose your new PIN.

Your new card comes with a randomly generated PIN.

You may wish to change this PIN to something more memorable. This can be easily changed in the Defence Bank app or Online Banking.

Set up a PIN.

Go to Card Management, select your card and click on Change PIN. Follow the prompts and you’re done.

We recommend that before you make this change, read the following tips to keep your new PIN is safe and secure.

  • Don’t repeat numbers – like 1111 or 2244.
  • Don’t use consecutive sequences of numbers like 1234 or 5678.
  • Don’t choose your birthday or anniversary for you, your spouse or your family.
  • Don’t use a number from any form of identification that you keep with you in your wallet.
  • Don’t use any part of your address or telephone number.
  • Don’t reuse the same PIN (however tempting). Having a different PIN for each of your accounts reduces risk so they can’t all be immediately accessed if your PIN is compromised.
  • Avoid numbers such as 0825 and 2580 - it’s the numbers in a row up and down the middle of the keypad.
  • Avoid 5683 - it spells love, and no-one loves getting scammed.

Set up your direct debits.

For extra security, your card comes with a new card number, CVC and expiry date. This means that if you’ve set up direct debits or regular payment arrangements linked to your old card like Spotify, Netflix or your weekly gym membership fee, you’ll need to update these services with your new card details so you don’t miss a payment.

Add cards to your digital wallet.

Keep your Defence Bank Visa Debit card handy by adding it to your digital wallet. It’s secure, easy to set up and keeps your money with you, wherever you are.

  1. Open the Wallet app.
  2. Tap the plus sign in the upper-right corner.
  3. Enter your card’s security code to add your credit or debit card from your iTunes account. Or, select ‘Add a different card’ and use your camera to enter the card information.*

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay and select Add a Credit or Debit Card.
  3. Enter your card’s security code to add your credit or debit card from your iTunes account. Or, select ‘Add a different card’ and use your camera to enter the card information.*

  1. Open the Fitbit app on your phone and then go to your watch settings.
  2. Tap Fitbit Wallet and follow the instructions on how to add your card.
  3. If you don’t have a PIN code for your phone already, you will be prompted to set one.
  4. You will need to enter your card details which are then verified.
  5. You'll then be prompted to review and accept the terms and conditions.
  6. You may be asked to complete further identity verification, via an SMS code or a call to us.
  7. Fitbit Pay will now sync your activated card to your watch via Bluetooth, and you’re ready to go.
  1. Install the Garmin app to your iOS or Android smartphone.
  2. Open the app on your phone and go to Garmin Devices. Choose your device, then tap Garmin Pay and Create Your Wallet.
  3. Create a four-digit passcode to keep your digital wallet on your watch secure.
  4. Add your Defence Bank Visa Debit card by selecting card type, and manually entering the card data or scan using your phone’s camera
  5. Verify your identity using the one-time passcode sent to your phone or email, or by calling us.
  6. Once the verification is complete, your card will be added to your wallet.
  1. Download Google Pay from Google Play.
  2. Add your Defence Bank card number.
  3. Tap and pay – no need to launch the app – simply wake your device to pay in person with a tap of your phone wherever contactless payments are accepted or pay in-app by selecting ‘Buy with Google Pay’.

  1. Open the Samsung Pay app and sign in with your Samsung ID.
  2. Register your fingerprint and device passcode which you’ll use to authorise payments. Members with a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ can also scan their irises for iris authentication.
  3. Scan or enter your Defence Bank Visa debit or credit card details.
  4. Verify your card details and enter the verification code.

Staying secure.

You can’t be too careful when it comes to keeping your identity and money secure.

Before using your new Defence Bank Visa Debit Card remember to:

  • Sign your card immediately.
  • Cut up any old cards you have lying around.
  • Always keep your card and PIN separate – and never share them with anyone!

Card management tips.

Change your PIN.

Go to 'Card Management', choose your card and select 'Change PIN'. Follow the prompts and you’re done.

Card Controls.

Use your card the way you like with the Card Controls functionality in the Defence Bank app and Online Banking. It gives you the ability to block or turn off access to the following transaction types in Australia or overseas.

  • PayWave.
  • Online purchase.
  • In-store purchases.
  • ATM withdrawals.
  • Digital wallet.

Block a lost or stolen card.

If you have misplaced your card, you can apply an instant block using the lock functionality found in card management within your app. The block can be removed at any time.

However, if you feel that your card is lost or stolen, you should immediately cancel your card, which can be done quickly and easily through your app. You’ll receive an immediate digital replacement in your digital wallet using Quick Cards.

Alternatively, you can temporarily block transactions in 'Card Controls' until you have it back.

Cancel a lost card.

If you suspect you card has been stolen you can cancel it to immediately deactivate access.

If you do this, your card will not be able to be used. This cannot be reversed unless you order a new card. If you are eligible you can receive an immediate digital replacement card in your digital wallet.

Mobile app.

  1. Log into your Mobile app.
  2. Under the menu select Manage Accounts > Manage Cards.
  3. Select the card you wish to activate and follow the prompts.

Online Banking.

  1. Log into your Defence Bank Online Banking.
  2. Select Services > Card Management.
  3. Input your one-time password or VIP security code.
  4. Select the card you wish to activate and follow the prompts.

Yes, there is - and it depends on how you use your card.

  • If you’re using PayWave, there is a $400 daily limit. Where your transaction exceeds $100 you may be requested to enter your pin. Where you have exceeded your $400 daily limit, you will need to insert or swipe your card and enter your pin.
  • When inserting or swiping your card, there is a $1,000 limit, which also takes into account cash withdrawals. If you need to spend over this amount, you can insert the card, press ‘Credit’ and enter your PIN, and spend up to what is in your account. Be aware that the merchant may charge a surcharge for this option.
  • If you’ve loaded your card into your digital wallet (i.e. Apple Pay, Fitbit Pay, Garmin Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay), you can spend up to your account balance.

Defence Bank offers Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay. You can set your cards up through the Defence Bank app, or directly through your phone depending on the device. There are no additional charges by Defence Bank to use these services.

You can cancel your credit or debit card through either Online Banking or the Defence Bank mobile app.

Online Banking.

Select Services > Card Management, then select the card you wish to report and follow the prompts.

Mobile app.

Select Manage Accounts > Manage Cards, then select the card you wish to report and follow the prompts.

You can then order a replacement card within the mobile app and be issued with a virtual card which you can add to your digital wallet and use immediately. This removes the stress and inconvenience of having to wait until a physical card arrives in the mail.
