Love is in the air but so are online scams. Stay safe this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is about love, but for scammers, it’s also an opportunity to take advantage of people sending gifts online or seeking connection. Whether you’re buying flowers, booking a romantic dinner, or chatting on dating apps, staying cyber safe is just as important as choosing the right card

Here’s what to watch out for and how to protect your money:

1. Romance scams are real and costly.

Scammers often create fake profiles on dating sites or social media, building trust before asking for money. They might claim they need help with travel costs, medical bills, or a sudden emergency. If someone you’ve never met asks for money, stop and think. It’s a red flag.

Tip: Never send money or share your banking details with someone you haven’t met in person.

2. Fake gift websites and phishing emails.

Valentine’s Day brings a surge in online shopping and scammers know it. Fake websites offering flowers, chocolates, or jewellery can steal your card details. Phishing emails might look like delivery updates or special offers but contain malicious links.

Tip: Only shop with trusted retailers and check the website URL carefully. If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is.

3. Protect your accounts.

Strong passwords and multi-factor authentication are your best defence. Avoid using the same password across multiple sites and never share your login details.

Tip: Enable notifications in the Defence Bank app to keep track of transactions in real time.

4. Spot the signs early.

If something feels off -whether it’s a rushed request for money or a suspicious email - trust your instincts. Scammers rely on urgency and emotion to cloud judgment.

Tip: If you think your account has been compromised, contact us immediately on 1800 033 139. We’re here to help.

Love safely, bank securely.

Valentine’s Day should be about joy, not financial stress. By staying alert and taking a few simple steps, you can keep your money and your heart safe.
