In the lead up to Christmas and the summer holiday period, life tends to get busy and sometimes we let our guard down as the rush sets in.
However, it is important to stay vigilant especially online when shopping or using banking services as scam and fraud attempts are particularly active during this time.
Here are some simple steps for you to stay safe when transacting online this Christmas.
- Protecting your password for online banking transactions;
- Treating your mobile phone as if it is a wallet, keep it with you and safe;
- Setting a PIN, passcode or fingerprint or other biometrics for your mobile;
- Installing reputable security software on all devices;
- Not saving passwords or PINs as contacts on your phone or tablet;
- Ensuring you thoroughly remove personal data from the device before selling or recycling it;
- Never providing personal details over the phone or respond to demands for money; reputable organisations will not demand money over the phone;
- Not making large bank transfers to pay for big ticket private sale items without seeing the items first.
It also pays to be aware of some of the more common scams including fake websites that look like genuine stores, romance scams, fake charities and other scams that are just too good to be true. Find a full list of the different types of scams here.
